[audio]Jazz Archives: Ragtime Piano
Phil Elwood presents a program on the evolution of Ragtime music from Scott Joplin to Jelly Roll Morton. The early composers of Ragtime saw themselves foremost as composers and looked down on the un-schooled musicians that later adapted ragtime into what became known as Jazz. Joplin in particular was rather conservative in his approach to Ragtime, and did little to include the swinging beat that was to be popularized by later musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton...

[audio]Mary Stafford - Im Gonna Jazz My Way - Mary Stafford
Mary Stafford sang blues primarily in the club circuit, but she also cut a dozen sides for Columbia in 1921 (she was the first black woman to record for Columbia). The full title of this piece is "I'm Gonna Jazz My Way Right Straight Through Paradise". It was recorded on March 7, 1921. The label credits "Mary Stafford and Her Jazz Band", but some sources I've seen credit Charlie Johnson's Orchestra with the accompaniment.

A program of poetry, jazz, and text-sound composition, featuring works by the Bobby Scott Trio, Charles Amirkhanian, Miles Davis, and Chris Hottel. The program begins with an early version of one of Charles Amirkhanian’s popular works of sound poetry, “Radii,” which takes as its text every word in the dictionary that begins with “r-a-d-i”. This is followed by four pieces by the Bobby Scott Trio taken from an old 1953 Savoy recording (MG 15055)...

Chaotic and fun, this sort of adventurous and experimental programing was typical of the anarchistic artistic world that was Berkeley during the late 1...
